Exhibition No. 1

Bio / Artist Statement

My grandfather gave me a camera when I was three years old because I couldn’t talk. It became my main means of expression as the years went on and speech remained a struggle. I wandered through Africa for two years in my 20s and the photographic record of this time went on to become an exhibition that toured seven venues in England. I formed Urban Fox Press with Billy Childish and produced over 50 books for local artists and poets, and made a living on the side as an adventure travel writer. I exhibited widely (24 solo shows and 15 group shows) including at the home of traditional photography in the UK, Julia Margaret Cameron’s house, alongside Billy, and Patti Smith. I began pinhole photography in 2002, and long distance nature running in 2012, which had added much to my art practice, as has volunteering at the Botanical Gardens and Hamilton Tiny Shelters. Nowadays I continue with all these activities, alongside painting, which I took up during covid.
